THE END OF THE LAW

Commonly understood as the first theologian of the Christian faith, Paul set forth the categories by which we describe our relationship with Christ. Did he understand the new covenant Jesus announced at the Last Supper primarily as a replacement of the old Mosaic covenant God made with Israel, or as a renewal and completion of the old? Jason C Meyer surveys the various differences that have been argued between the two covenants in The End of the Law: Mosaic Covenant In Pauline Theology, carefully and inductively perfoming a semantic, grammatical, and contextual analysis of all the Pauline texts dealing with covenant concepts. This is Book Seven of the New American Commentary Studies in Bible and Theology series, an extension of the long-respected New American Commentary.

This comment is not entirely germane to the post that it's attached to, but I came to your site due to your critique of Hillsong and it sparked a question. This is your most recent post, and thus the site of my question.
What does it take to be saved?
I saw that a good portion of your criticism was based on the fact that Hillsong does not preach the fact that man is unregenerately sinful. However, if you use something like the "Romans Road" as an explanation of the gospel, then that is not a part of it. (especially Romans 10:9)
Furthermore, coming from a Reformed tradition, i.e. the belief that man is not active in the work of justification, it seems to imply that even less is "required".
You can certainly state that Hillsong is preaching an incorrect DOCTRINE, but I don't see how you can imply that their presentation of the GOSPEL is flawed.
Thanks so much!!! This is a question that has been bothering me for a long time and I would appreciate your insight.

Josh, Hillsong's presentation of the Gospel is heretical according to their own doctrine statement. Their own doctrine statement says that we must repent of our sins in order to be saved. Yet it is entirely absent from their presentation. Furthermore, they even used a verse and deleted a line from that verse that spoke of "turning from their wicked ways".
As a reformed guy I hold to Monergism, that justification is entirely of God. Hillsong is not Calvinist and I do not expect them to hold to a Monergistic view. But from an evangelistic viewpoint however, the Calvinist and Arminian present the Gospel very similarly when speaking to unregenerate sinners. The biblical call is on all men everywhere to repent of their sins and trust in Christ. Both the Calvinist and the Arminian would utter that sentence but the Calvinist would understand that repentance as a gift of God that gives outward evidence of the inner transformation. The Arminian would understand it more as a personal decision to repent and turn away from sin out of love and obedience to Christ. Whichever side of the fence you sit on - Hillsong's failure to preach repentance is a failure to preach the Gospel - because they have substituted their own false therapeutic gospel. Paul describes this as a damnable offense (Galatians 1:8-9).
I targeted this one issue of repentance because it violated their very own doctrine statement. I would also describe their Gospel presentation totally inadequate due to their failure to say anything of God's character and nature, they say nothing of human sinfulness, they say nothing of judgment and heaven and hell, they say nothing of Christ's atoning work, and they say nothing of the call to repent and trust the Savior.
If you want this fleshed out some more then read my series called Anatomy of the Gospel which you can find here (read it from the bottom up as it is in reverse chronological order due to blogspot's inability to do it the other way around)

For a video presentation where I share the Gospel simply in five videos which are all about three minutes in length then go here:

I hope this helps. And also, if you comment again, could you please comment under one of the relevant Hillsong posts. Thanks
