Exposing And Expelling Heretics (Part 7)

Today we pick up from where we left off on our expository journey through the Epistle of Jude. Jude represents the first expository assignment I have been tasked with in our church plant in Denmark - Kristuskirken. Though short in length, Jude is a letter jam packed with information on why we should hunt down false teachers that conceal themselves in the church, how we should identify them, and that we as Christians should go to war against them secure in the knowledge of being kept in the safety of God's preserving grace. Much of the credit for this series must go to John MacArthur whose teaching on this Epistle has been my major source.

1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: 2 May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. 3 Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Jude 1-4)

In John 6 we see a great apostacy when Jesus has a great crowd following Him and most of them leave because of Jesus’ hard sayings. In the Old Testament apostacy always refers to Israel when they abandon God and Jeremiah 2 is a great example of this. But let’s look again at verse 4 of Jude as we head to one of the very controversial parts of Jude and perhaps in all of the Bible. Jude describes these apostates as people "who long ago were designated for this condemnation“. We know that this apostacy had been prophecied long ago, even as far back as Enoch before the flood of Noah. Jude says in verses 14 and 15 that:

It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, "Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him." (Jude 14-15)

But there is even more to this. We have already discussed how Jude comforts the believers with the doctrine of their election. Those who God elects He calls, those who God calls He keeps. The same is true of these apostates. These are false teachers that God has already appointed to damnation. This is a doctrine which I cannot deal with by pretending it is not in Scripture. I cannot deal with it by ignoring it. And I cannot fully explain it within the infinite mind of God. But I will tell you what the Scripture says of it. When Arminians ask if I believe in double Predestination I find it to be a redundant and antagonistic term. Antagonistic because they find the idea of God predestining people to damnation to be repulsive. Redundant because I can't see how God's Sovereign predestination could mean anything other than everyone being predestined otherwise God is not Sovereign. But there is far more to the equation than the oversimplified Arminian objections as we shall see from Scripture.

First of all we should not argue with God about anything because He made everything, He owns everything, and He knows a lot of things that we don’t know:

Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity? (Matthew 20:15)

Second, the wicked serve their own evil desires, but this still ultimately serves the sovereign purposes of God:

The LORD has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.(Proverbs 16:4)

Third, even though God works all things together, including evil, for His glory – they are fully responsible for their sin.

You refuse to come to me that you may have life. (John 5:40)

Fourth God desires to see wicked people come to repentance:

Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord GOD, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? (Ezekiel 18:23)

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

And fifth, though we struggle to understand this, all these things fit together in the infinite mind of God:

You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?" But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?" Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory — even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? As indeed he says in Hosea, "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people,' and her who was not beloved I will call 'beloved.'" "And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' there they will be called 'sons of the living God.'" (Romans 9:19-26)

This is a difficult subject and these verses are well worth meditating on. This is a real subject but one I prefer to leave in the hands of the Sovereign God Whose work is perfect and all His ways are just. As Abraham said "shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is right" (Genesis 18:25b). I also recommend RC Sproul's very helpful book on this subject - “Chosen by God”.

Lame Attempts At Relevance (Part 7)

It has been common for me to hear Christian ministers and missionaries tell me that we should not use words that todays generation doesn't understand. Words like "sin" and "repent" need to be re-phrased as "mistake" and "change". The Ten Commandments are now the ten suggestions. The Bible is now helpful rather than authoritative. And worship leaders fight very hard to remain marginally less than 30 years behind the contemporary music of our day. In keeping with that train of seeker sensitive thought, how about someone tell the clown in this video that the word "record" (ie. a vinyl LP like what my father listened to in the 70's) disappeared ten years before any people in this audience were even born!



The fight for many "churches" to be "relevant" just continues to trawl new depths of sheer stupidity. How about a semi popular gay-band song from the 80's that most of us can't even remember? Setting aside the obvious personal hygiene issues that this video raises, try and contemplate the creativity required to take an old song and replace one word with the Name of my Lord. Why not try preaching the riveting subject of the person and work of Christ! Why not heed this rebuke from Art Azurdia:

The Piper Warren Interview (Part 5)

Today, I have decided to add one last post to this series on the tragically bizarre interview between John Piper and Rick Warren. This is because a lot of new information that exposes Rick Warren, as even more fraudulent, came to light in this sensational online radio discussion between Chris Rosebrough of Pirate Christian Radio and Phil Johnson from Grace To You. This entire discussion is very long (all three parts add up to about five hours) because it is a piece by piece dissection of the interview between Piper and Warren. This is not the sort of thing we should listen to on a regular basis but these particular programs are very much worth listening to for educational purposes in the art of practicing discernment in the cryptic world of mainstream modern evangelicalism. Also, Warren's MASSIVE prominence as a "spokesman" for Christianity gets a much needed expose for what it is - a total sham! Many of us who find ourselves in churches who either embrace or consider the "Purpose Driven" propaganda need to be aware of Warren's modus operandi.

Chris Rosebrough is seen by many as a bit of a "shock jock" but his hermeneutics are generally very good. Furthermore, Phil Johnson is a true and godly heavyweight in the world of Christian discernment. Phil continually weighs in during the program with excellent insights that are constantly Gospel centered and exceedingly helpful in decoding Warrenisms. But what makes these programs a "must listen" is the many audio files that Rosebrough digs up from Warren's archives that completely expose him for the chameleon (or liar) that he is. I knew Rick Warren was bad news but I had no idea how bad until I heard these shocking revelations from his own mouth! I am deeply saddened by the fact that I consider Piper's approach to this interview is a major low point in a ministry that has profoundly impacted me for the positive. I am done with this, if you really want to get to the bottom of the misleading, self contradictory, delusional, dishonest, and damaging ministry of Rick Warren then listen to these programs because everything that needs to be said is spoken with acute clarity. As a personal footnote, I would add, pay particular attention to the frequency with which Rick Warren prefaces his comments with the words "to me" or "for me" - this, I would contend, is a strong indicative of his hermeneutical approach that is born out as the interview progresses.

The doctrines of grace are often known as the five points of Calvinism, but they were not the invention of John Calvin or his reforming cohorts of the sixteenth century. Rather, they are biblical doctrines, as Dr. Steven J. Lawson demonstrated in his book Foundations of Grace (2006). Now, in Pillars of Grace, Dr. Lawson shows that the doctrines of grace have been understood and taught sometimes in embryonic form, sometimes with great clarity throughout church history. Jude's Epistle is a letter that calls the church of Jesus Christ to fight a war. And this is not a physical war with the evil world around us. It is a call to fight for the truth of the Gospel against the false teachers or apostates that sneak into the visible church. The church is spoken of in two senses in Scripture which theologians divide into the "invisible church" and the "visible church". The invisible church is the real body of Christ made up of all the true disciples of Jesus Christ. Only God knows who they all are and so we call it invisible. The visible church is the church that we see. We are not talking about false churches and cults. But local groups of people who profess Christ, and gather together to hear the faithful preaching of the Gospel. This visible church that we can see is made up of sheep and goats, wheat and tares, true and false. Because of this we are called to be constantly at war defending the truth and exposing the false.

"Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'(Matthew 7:13-23)

As a sidenote on this passage – did you know that these are the words that follow the incredibly popular verse: ”Judge not lest ye be judged”. Based on what Jesus said in the verses we read it is obvious that judge not lest ye be judged is not a warning against criticizing false teachers. This is just one example of many where Jesus warns of the apostates. Paul’s dying words to Timothy were:

preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (2 Timothy 4:2-4)

Peter also gave this warning:

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. (2 Peter 2:1-3)

So Jesus says they’re coming, Paul says they’re coming, Peter says they’re coming and Jude says they’re here!

Verses 3 and 4 are the key verses to Jude. Verse 3 is the call to fight and verse 4 tells us why we need to fight and who we need to fight against. Verse 4 gives us a clue as to why they are so dangerous in the first 8 words – "for certain people have crept in unnoticed" – they are anonymous people who don’t draw attention to themselves and they sneak in without anyone noticing. They don’t just walk through the front door with a big 666 tattoo’d to their forehead. They are the masters of sounding Christian without being Christian. Look how Jude describes them in verse 12:

These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted;

They are hidden reefs (they look safe but they’re not).

They are waterless clouds, (they promise great things but don’t deliver).

They are fruitless trees (they can imitate a Christian but have no fruit of the Spirit).

Now when we talk about apostasy, we're not talking about confusing that with mere indifference to the Word or ignorance of the Word, or error. There are people who have never heard the truth. There are people who are ignorant of the truth, indifferent to the truth, have not even exposed themselves to it and there are people who have heard erroneous presentations masquerading as truth. We're not talking about that. When you talk specifically about an apostate, you're talking about someone who has received the light but not the life, the seed but not the fruit, and perhaps the written Word but not the living Word. It is a willful and deliberate rejection of the truth after the truth has been heard.

Jesus described apostasy in the parable of the soils:

And he told them many things in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. (Matthew 13:3-8)

Now jump forward and read verses 18 to 23:

"Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."

Two big things to notice about apostates is that they hate to suffer and they love worldly pleasure which is why Jude describes them as people who "pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ". The parable of the soils appears in all three synoptic Gospels and "dechomaiis" is the Greek word Luke uses to describe the reception of the word by those who fall away. In Mark 4:20, which describes the good soil, the word for receive is "paradechomai".

John Macarthur says that:

The good soil does more than a superficial reception, paradechomaiis an intensified word, a stronger term indicating a deep reception. There's a superficial reception, there's a dechomai. And then there's a paradechomai, a much deeper heart acceptance on the part of the good soil. Those who apostatize may hear the truth, understand the truth, but they never produce fruit because they never have any root. Jude says, they are without fruit, doubly dead and uprooted.

James White Coming To Brisbane

For all my Aussie friends, particularly in Brisbane, you do not want to miss this outstanding event featuring heavyweight Christian apologist Dr. James White. It will be hosted by pastor Craig Ireland at Hope Christian Church which, I am thrilled to say, is one of Brisbane's solid biblical churches pastored by my precious brother Craig Ireland (I plan to talk about the Craig's journey and church plant in a later post - just waiting for Craig to answer my calls). Be sure to confirm your place at this debate between Oneness Pentecostal Roger Perkins and the combative Dr. White over the essential Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

Todd Friel and Tony Verkinnes on Wretched Radio have a running joke about the popular "Christian" singing trio "Philips, Craig, and Dean" which goes something like this:

Todd: Hey I went to the big Christian music convention last weekend and you'll never guess who I met there!

Tony: Who???

Todd: Philips, Craig and Dean!

Tony: Really?

Todd: Well obviously, not all of them at the same time.

Be warned, this is a joke that will fall completely flat unless you know some inside theological information about Philips, Craig, and Dean. They hail from a Oneness Pentecostal church, a denomination that holds to the anti-Trinitarian doctrine of Modalism.

The heresy of modalism/sabellianism goes back to the second century AD and was a reason for the Athanasian Creed which godly men from that time formulated to refute all doctrine that was anti-Trinitarian. I won’t delve into an in-depth study on the Trinity right now but I recommend Paul Washer’s book “The One True God” for an excellent and simple study on the subject. The Athanasian creed is very long but it if you need to summarize it in three points regarding the Trinity as taught in Scripture they are these:

1.There is one God.
2.This one God exists in three persons.
3.These three Persons are each fully God.

Modalism however does not teach one God in three Persons. It teaches one god in three manifestations. So the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit become different roles that God uses at different times – just like water, ice, and steam is h2o appearing in different forms (maybe the joke is getting a bit funnier now). The modalist has major problems with issues like Jesus praying to the Father or Jesus’ baptism where the Father spoke and the Holy Spirit descended. For the modalist Jesus is not eternal, but how the Father appeared for 33 years. For the modalist Jesus cannot be a mediator between sinners and the Father. For the modalist Jesus cannot suffer the Father’s wrath on the cross. I could say more but I think you can see modalism is a big problem – it is idolatry.

Modalism is alive and well today and has other major proponents who tend to try and fly under the theological radar, none more so than popular “evangelical” preacher TD Jakes. This, in turn, highlights the need for those of us who inhabit church pews each Sunday, and then head back out into our mission fields, to be informed about subtle heresies like modalism. the doctrine of the Trinity is one of the cornerstone doctrines of the historic Christian faith as witnessed by the many creeds and confessions through the centuries. People have given their lives defending it and you don't want to have the wool pulled over your eyes. So be sure to come out and learn some vital truth . . . and enjoy the fireworks!

Harold Camping, Harold Shmamping

"End Times prophet" Harold Camping's bold prediction of the May 21 2011 rapture has provoked widespread ridicule and mockery. Was he a false prophet, and an enemy of the Gospel? I think people have been way too harsh because here at the Bottom Line we realize that the problem is not with Mr Camping's eschatology - not at all! He just didn't pay enough attention in math class. This is not the time to abandon predictions of apocalypse and armageddon. We just need to seek out better numerologists and then we will be able to figure it all out.

Today, I am proud to say, the Bottom Line blog has spared no expense in bringing you, the valued audience, the best numerological end times analysis we could afford. Ok Ok, I Took The Mark And Joined Facebook

After three years of constant peer pressure by my friends, colleagues, and ministry co-laborers, I have finally succumbed and taken the mark! Yes - I finally got a Facebook page. I have often found in recent years that there are many times when I want to rapidly disperse information to the widest possible audience and I have become very persuaded that Facebook is one of the best tools for doing that.

So, you won't find trivia, searching for old school buddies, and pictures of sticky date pudding that I just ate (sorry Heath, but you were an easy target). My Facebook page will be purely for notifying people of where I am preaching, important blog posts, conference announcements, urgent updates from the persecuted church, great deals on ministry resources etc. It will not be family oriented as the nature of many of my posts can cause provocation and offense - it is important that I protect my family from a lot of the necessary hostility that I engage in. The absense of family info is not meant to indicate negligence but rather protection even though my sinful flesh can lead me into the bad husband and father ditch. Lord please grant me wisdom and alertness with regard to this.

In the world of Facebook, I dare not indulge in the perilous time consuming world of social networking and trivial chit chat. I have a marriage to protect and I am friends with Paul Washer. Next time I bump into him I don't want to get a thrashing from him . . .

Zeroing in on verse four of Jude's Epistle we see that these apostates, or false teachers sneak in under the radar and they are anonymous. If you look at church history you will see that liberals and apostates never build churches or Bible colleges. They always take them over. Look at Yale, Princeton, and Oxford, and even Spurgeon’s Bible College. Look at the Methodists and the Lutherans and the Anglicans. Christian movements corrupted by apostates. And I have some brothers who are on the inside of apostacized churches and schools. I love them, but they are foolishly trying to use the same strategy as the apostates. They are sneaking around trying to be reformers without anyone noticing. Al Mohler who, by God’s grace, reformed Southern Baptist Seminary gave this advice – apostacy and compromise happen little by little day after day until the truth is completely lost. Reform always requires a 180% call to repentance because you cannot biblically persuade apostates – they are not Christians. It is really a thrilling ride to hear Dr Mohler’s story on reforming the largest Baptist seminary in the world. In 1993 it was a liberal toilet bowl of perversion. Today it is regarded by many as the finest Bible college anywhere in the world. Al Mohler was hired by conservative Baptist leaders (who took over the movement in America) to go into Southern Seminary and reform it. On his first day he addressed the seminary at their meeting hall. As he came up to speak he looked out the window and saw a picture hanging by a rope from a tree and burning. As he looked closer he saw that it was a picture of himself. As he spoke, hundreds of professors and thousands of students stood up and turned their backs to him. Mohler only had a short message to all the teachers that morning. “At Southern Seminary we have a doctrine statement. Every teacher has to sign it and teach it or you will be fired. I’ll be waiting for you in my office.

Brothers and sisters, we don’t need to sneak around and be polite to false teachers. We can shout out loud in the light of day secure in the calling, love, and safekeeping of God. Contend for the Once for All Delivered Faith.

As we look through the rest of Jude verse 4 we see the frightening words concerning the apostates - "who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ". In these words we see election again – this time to damnation. We also see that Jude focuses more on the character of these false teachers than their doctrine. Why is that? And what does he mean by denial of Jesus Christ? I’ll talk about that, and more, in the upcoming posts. It should be an interesting ride!

URGENT MESSAGE From Voice Of The Martyrs
